From my viewpoint the Tetons are one of the most highly over rated places for fall color in the US. With the exception of Oxbow Bend which is the "Old Faithful" of fall color, Teton fall color is capricious and limited in its range. If you desire primo Rocky Mt fall color, the westerrn slope of Colorado is far better.
On the other hand the Tetons are highly under rated for spring wildflowers. The reason probably is the most vivid displays are no where near the main paved roads. So the average tourist just doesn't bare witness to them.
On the morning of the above photo, I awoke with a friend at 4:30AM and stared out of my sleeping bag into a dense fog. Visibilty was probably 30 feet or less. The prospects for a great sunrise photo looked grim. Never the less we got up, brushed our teeth, and headed out. After a short drive and a short hike we got to our predetermined location. Things were improving. The fog began to lift, but the clouds were still thick. At about 5:30 we got a pleasant suprise. A stunning display of alpinglow began to build. We shot like crazy and less than 2 minutes later it was gone. The clouds swallowed the sun yet again. It would not come back until later that afternoon. We turned to each other and smiled, very glad that we didn't sleep in.
