| The Photograph |
In winter, the most promising landscape photo opportunities exist if you pursue what I like to call macro landscape or detail shots. The interplay between snow, mist and light can be quite interesting in many of the thermal regions. A single tree or group of trees can present itself in a manner that challenges the viewers imagination. The trick of course, is finding just the right composition and combination for the shot. I think you'll find that the challenge is one worth taking.
In Yellowstone the constantly changing weather and geothermal conditions control the light and with it your opportunities. As such any time during the day might end up being a good time to shoot. The above shot was taken at a 300mm equivalent focal length. It was seen while walking the length of the Firehole River Canyon, early on a morning in late February. In the morning, when snowmobiles are not present, the canyon is a place of amazing solitude. |
