The dense canopy created by the giant trees makes standard golden hour sunrise and sunset shots impossible in the Del Norte Coast Redwoods Park. The best time for photography is the late morning to late afternoon on a foggy day. At this time the low light conditions and fog interact to create a gothic atmosphere which is quite photogenic.
This fog, combined with the flowering of the California rhododendron make the last two weeks in May and the first week of June the best time for landscape photography in the redwood coastal region.
On the morning of the above photo, we waited patiently for the fog to lift sufficiently to yield the proper visual balance between a mysterious background and the lovely rhododendron bush in the foreground. The second problem was the slight movement of the flowers. The cars passing by on the nearby highway would create enough air movement to set the flowers in motion just slightly. With patience it was possible to get a crisp photo with the desired results.
