White Sands National Monument is one of the most unique photo locations in the North American continent. Located near Alamogordo, New Mexico, its white gypsum sand creates a surreal background for the interplay of light and shadow. On most days, the desert sky is a stark severe blue. Occasionally in the winter, fronts pass through the area dropping a light dusting of snow and leaving a trail of puffy cumulous clouds in thier wake.
This print of the month photo was taken shortly after sunrise on just such an occasion. The layer of clouds matted against the blue sky provided a unique counterpoint to winter like desert landscape below. |
